Consider how you would curate your social media with a critical public audience.
With the diversification of social media, we can interact with them on a variety of platforms. Like our matternmost, we can create separate groups to communicate and work on final projects together. This way you can quickly complete the information you want to exchange. With the diversification of social media, we can interact with them on a variety of platforms. Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space – what are the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official)?
Media space has a great influence on public figures. Some public figures can be highly sought after for a statement, others may be eviscerated for a particular incident. I often see social media platforms that expose educators for misconduct or government officials for taking bribery roads that lead to them losing their jobs. There are also bloggers or celebrities who have lost their business value due to some bad behaviour. The more people who have been famous people on social media follow, then when they have bad influences it also means they will be chastised more. Being in the public eye can lead to more attention and some benefit from it. But when you make a mistake and the public starts to distrust you, then the reason to gain from it will disappear.
Consider how to best address negative replies and critiques reflective of your personal values and employer social media policy?
I think we should distinguish between personal values and employer social media. Whatever we say in our personal social media no one cares about you. However, the online community that employers provide to build is representative of a group, not you as an individual. Employer social media policies are designed to restrict us from making negative statements in public communities that could affect the brand or company as a whole. Posting your own personal comments in an employer-provided community is seen by the public as representing the values of a company. The public will boycott you for negative comments.
Open dialogues about media literacy and factual information can create conflict, why does this happen?
Media literacy is “need to understand how to best apply the media resources available for learning, and to use media creation tools to create compelling and effective communication products such as videos, audio podcasts, and Web sites.(P.66)”
Information literacy is “had to make sure the information was credible, accurate, and reliable.”(P.66) Media literacy and factual information conflict because one is about making information richer media literacy and factual information conflict because one is about making information more informative and appealing, while the other focuses on the factuality of the information and does not require some content to enrich it. They have different priorities. Media literacy may use some effects to change the content of the message in order to attract attention. Factual information, however, advocates truthfulness and does not change anything. When a person wants to promote a message he may change the content, but this goes against media literacy.
What is the benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy?
I think a media-literate PLN would have a richer interaction and connection with many people. Some information with falsehoods has value because it is engaging enough. Sometimes people don’t care what the truth really is, they may just be entertaining to watch. Being in your own PLN is a process of seeking different views and then reaching a consensus. If consensus is not reached, then the interaction has not improved our learning. That is why a rich PLN is important.

Good post ! I agree with your points. They should not pass the buck. Even if they disagree with the comment, they should be responsible for the post. Users should treat others with respect when dealing with such issues. Users should not be resistant to negative comments. They should start a dialogue in a friendly way.
Hi Wei,
Thank you for the very insightful post! I completely agree with you that well-known people should be very cautious with what is posted online. There have many situations where peoples reputations have been tarnished due to their online activity and what they decided to share. Very interesting point on the professional community and how they restrict us from making negative comments. I can understand that it would have a drastic effect on the image of the company.
I do also appreciate how you mentioned that a media-literate PLN is able to have enhanced interaction. I do also agree with understanding the online platform and being able to partake in civil discourse respectively, a PLN can be taken to another level in regard to connection with people online.
Thanks again for the read!
Hi Wei! Thank you for your blog. It is true that public figures should be more careful when using media space because they have more influence than ordinary people. More people will pay attention to their news, so a small mistake will be magnified in the media space.
Another benefit of media-literate PLNs, I think, is that it helps to spread the message, because they are interesting.
